When planning a trip, “Travel taxes are largely hidden from view,” says Joseph Bates, Vice President for Research at the Global Business Travel Association. Although car rental companies now quote rates including taxes, sticker shock is not uncommon when you finally see that hotel or restaurant bill with the tax figured in. Plus, taxes vary widely among states and municipalities.

To make sense of it all, the GBTA analyzed taxes on hotel stays, car rentals and restaurant meals in America’s 50 largest travel markets.
